Short Stories Meet Film

The Jeonju International Film Festival has released details of its 'Short! Short! Short! 2013,' a project which promotes up-and-coming directors’ new visions. This year the program will consist of short films based on Korean writers’ short stories, thereby creating opportunities for good Korean literature to be introduced overseas. The focus this year will be KIM Young-ha who has captured the hearts of critics and readers alike.

KIM Young-ha's novel, 'My Right to Ravage Myself' has been translated into several language and published in the U.S., France, Japan and Poland. A JEON Soo-il film based on the novel was released in 2005 and he also took part in adapting the script for A Moment to Remember directed by LEE, John H.. Director BYUN Daniel H.'s The Scarlet Letter and NO Zin-soo's My Brother Came Back (working title) were also based on KIM's original stories. KIM will take part at this year's JIFF as a member of the jury in the competition section for Korean films. The three directors who will take part in the 'Short! Short! Short!' project are LEE Sang-woo, LEE Jin-woo and brothers PARK Jin-sung and PARK Jin-seok.

Director LEE Sang-woo is known for his distinctive and critical portrayals of Korean society in his films such as Father Is A Dog, Mother Is A Whore, Barbie and most recently Fire in Hell, which was invited to the Moscow International Film Festival. Director LEE Jin-woo came into the spotlight after directing the melodrama The Sundays of August and several short films. Directorial pair PARK Jin-seong and PARK Jin-seok co-wrote the original screenplay of the 2007 period horror Epitaph.

Projects made in the 'Short! Short! Short!' program have garnered recognition at international film festivals. Director KIM Jong-kwan’s Waiting (2007) was invited to the 37th Rotterdam International Film Festival and A Time to Love (2011) directed by BOO Ji-young and YANG Ik-june was screened at the 30th Vancouver International Film Festival, the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival and the 13th Cinemanila International Film Festival. Last year, directors KIM Gok and KIM Sun’s Solution, also produced in JIFF’s program, was screened at the Black Movie Festival of Switzerland.

Short! Short! Short! will be part of the 14th Jeonju International Film Festival which will take place from April 25th to May 3rd where the films will have their world premieres before being introduced at other international film festivals.
