Director ZHANG Lu is teaming up with a star cast for a new short that recently went into production in Seoul’s Gangnam district. The Gyeongju filmmaker is working with screen legend AHN Sung-ki, top stars MOON So-ri and PARK Hae-il, as well as newcomer HAN Ye-ri. Bringing an unusually large amount of star wattage to a short film, the cast members, taken by ZHANG’s artistic intentions, were eager to sign on to his tale of elderly love and wisdom, which as yet to settle on a title.

ZHANG, who is known primarily for his low-budget art films which have been well received on the festival circuit, such as Tang Poetry (2004), Grain in Ear (2005) and Dooman River (2010), has in recent years taken on new challenges. In 2013 he made his first documentary, Scenery, which was then followed with last year’s bigger budget film Gyeongju, on which he also worked with PARK.

Frequent IM Kwon-taek acolyte and major 1980s and 90s star AHN has also worked with ZHANG before, on KIM Dong-ho’s short film Jury, which was scripted by the arthouse director. MOON, a former Best New Actor awardee at the Venice Film Festival, most recently appeared in HONG Sangsoo’s Hill of Freedom. Meanwhile, HAN has been going from strength to strength, not least in her outing in last year BONG Joon-ho produced sea thriller Haemoo.
