The Jeonju International Film Festival, Korea’s second largest film festival, has appointed academic LEE Chung-jik as its new director later last month. With the appointment ceremony held in Jeonju on 3 August, his three-year term has started immediately.

Currently a professor at Chungang University's graduate school, LEE previously headed the Korean Film Council (then known as the Korean Film Commission), between 2002—2005. He also headed the first Seoul Independent Film Festival. Being a film producer himself, his producing credits include films The Pot, Sogyumo Acacia Band's Story and Enlightenment Film.

The festival organizing committee cited LEE's diverse experience in academia, filmmaking and policy in its decision to appoint him. LEE said he would focus on building on the festival’s “digital” “independent” and “alternative” cinema strengths.
