Life of AN Jung-geun to Get Big Screen Treatment

JK YOUN, the director behind the consecutive ten million viewer smashes Haeundae (2009) and Ode to My Father (2014), and founder of the hit-making production company JK Film, has selected his next project, which will be a big-screen adaptation of the stage musical Hero, which chronicles the life of Korean independence fighter AN Jung-geun.

According to KIL Young-min, the president of JK Film, YOUN has been preparing the project for the past two years and intends to make it as a musical film. The musical debuted in 2009 and earned several awards at the Korea Musical Awards.

AN was a Korea independence activist who is famous for having assassinated four-time Prime Minister of Japan ITO Hirobumi in 1909, an act for which he was executed in 1910. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962 by the South Korean government.

The life of AN Jung-geun has previously been tackled three times on the big screen, first in the King Gojong and martyr An Jung-Geun (1959), North Korean film An Jung Gun Shoots Ito Hirobumi (1979) and SUH Se-won’s Thomas Ahn Joong Keun (2004).

JK Film, which recently scored a hit with Confidential Assignment, will complete work on the new melodrama That’s Only My World and the financial drama Negotiation before embarking on Hero towards the middle or end of next year, following scripting and casting. The project will encompass events in China and Russia.
