Jeonju Cinema Project to Screen in Japan

KIM Yang-hee’s debut The Poet and the Boy has been invited to screen in the ‘World Focus’ section of this year’s 30th Tokyo International Film Festival. The film, which stars YANG Ik-june, JEON Hye-jin and JUNG Ga-ram, was one of the three Jeonju Cinema Projects at this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival.

YANG features as the titular poet. Already in his late 30s, he lives on Jeju Island with his wife (JEON) who is frustrated by his constant inability to earn income from his poetry. He meets a young man, the boy (JUNG), who works at a local donut shop and grows close to him as he tries to help him with his personal circumstances.

A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts (K’Arts), KIM has made several well regarded shorts and also worked as an assistant director on several commercial films, including the period action film The Sword with No Name (2009) and the romantic comedy Love On-Air (2012).

Known as the director and star of indie gangster film Breathless (2008), YANG is a veteran performer whose recent credits include ZHANG Lu’s Busan International Film Festival opener A Quiet Dream last year. JEON was seen in The Throne (2015) and this year’s The Merciless, while JUNG is a new face on the scene, whose first film role was in JUNG Ji-woo’s Fourth Place (2015).

The Poet and the Boy welcomed just over 12,000 spectators in limited release in Korea last month. It is represented internationally by Korean sales boutique Finecut. The 30th TIFF will take place from October 25th to November 3rd this year.
