LEE Dong-eun’s Sophomore Drama with LIM Soo-jung Awarded in France

LEE Dong-eun’s sophomore drama Mothers picked up the NETPAC Award at the recently concluded Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema in France.

Featuring A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and The Table (2017) star LIM Soo-jung, Mothers (2017) tells of a young widow who agrees to let her deceased husband’s teenage son stay with her. At first they don’t get along, but soon she tries to help him find his birth mother.

Produced by Myung Films and represented internationally by Finecut, Mothers premiered last October at the Busan International Film Festival in the Korean Cinema Today - Vision section. The film will next screen at Helsinki Cine Asia, beginning on March 15, before traveling to the Florence Korea Film Fest which starts on March 22. In April, the film will be released by CGV ARTHOUSE in Korea.

Director LEE debuted with the queer drama In Between Seasons, which first screened at the Busan International Film Festival in 2016, where it picked up the KNN Award. The film will find its way to Korean theaters this year on February 22.

The Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema in France, which ran from January 30 to February 6, also welcomed two other Korean works: LEE Kwang-kuk’s A Tiger in Winter and Hong Sangsoo’s Claire's Camera. Korean films have done well in Vesoul in the past, with several picking up Vesoul’s top awards, the Cyclo d’Or, including ZHANG Lu’s Grain in Ear in 2006, O Muel’s Jiseul in 2013 and LEE Yong-seung’s 10 Minutes in 2014.
