Korean Sales Agent Launches BURNING and MONSTRUM at EFM

Korean sales outfit Finecut is in the midst of a busy European Film Market (EFM). The company represents three of the Korean films screening at the Berlin International Film Festival this year and has three major upcoming titles on its docket, in addition to a range of recent commercial and indie fare.

Human, Space, Time and Human, the controversial new film from KIM Ki-duk which is having its world premiere in the Panorama Special section of the Berlin International Film Festival, has sealed several deals with distributors in Japan (King Records), Norway (Fidalgo Film) and Greece and Cyprus (Danaos Film). The film stars Min FUJII (My New Sassy Girl, 2016), JANG Keun-suk (You're My Pet, 2011), AHN Sung-ki (Revivre, 2015), LEE Sung-jae (Public Enemy, 2002) and RYOO Seung-bum (The Berlin File, 2013) among others as passengers on a warship who wake up one morning to find that they are floating in the sky.

Finecut also presold the latest Hong Sangsoo film Grass to Les Acacias in France, which premiered in the Forum section of Berlinale. The film stars KIM Min-hee (The Handmaiden, 2016) as a writer in a cafe who eavesdrops on other patrons.

Meanwhile, fellow Forum invitee Last Child (2017) had its inflight rights presold to Encore Inflight. From director SHIN Dong-seok, the New Currents competitor from last year’s Busan International Film Festival follows grieving parents who begin to bond with the classmate who was saved by their recently departed son.

Rounding out Finecut’s EFM presales were more worldwide inflight rights buys by Encore for KIM Jin-muk's TRUE FICTION and KIM Jong-woo’s Home (2017), which was also bought by Creative Century Entertainment for Taiwan.

Finecut also has a trio of major upcoming titles that were drumming up interest on the market floor in Berlin. These include LEE Chang-dong’s long-awaited comeback Burning. Based on a short story by MURAKAMI Haruki, the film features YOO Ah-in (Veteran, 2015) and Steven YEUN (Okja, 2017). Also in their slate is the upcoming period creature feature Monstrum, from Countdown (2011) director HEO Jong-ho and featuring KIM Myung-min (V.I.P., 2017), LEE Hye-ri of Kpop group Girl’s Day and Okja co-star CHOI Woo-shik. Finecut also presented a promo clip of their animated title Red Shoes & the 7 Dwarfs from director HONG Sung-ho, which features Hollywood stars such as Chloë Grace Moretz, Sam Caflin and Gina Gershon.
