LEE Chang-dong’s BURNING (2018) will go into the 13th Asian Film Awards as a favorite this year after scoring eight nominations, more than any other film, including Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters. The acclaimed drama bowed in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

BURNING is nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (YOO Ah-in), Best Newcomer (JUN Jong-seo), Best Screenplay (LEE Chang-dong, OH Jung-mi), Best Cinematography (HONG Kyeong-pyo), Best Production Design (SHIN Jeom-hee) and Best Sound (LEE Seung-chul). LEE’s work has been drawing acclaim around the word and recently became the first Korean film to ever land on the shortlist for the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the Academy Awards.

Other Korean contenders at this year’s AFAs will include HAN Ji-min, who is nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Miss Baek (2018), KWON Hae-hyo of Hotel by the River (2018) for Best Supporting Actor and JIN Seo-yeon of Believer (2018) for Best Supporting Actress. Believer is also nominated in the Best Music category, for composer DALPALAN. In other technical categories, CHAE Gyeong-hwa is nominated for Best Costume Design and KIM Jae-bum and KIM Sang-bum are up for Best Editing, all for The Spy Gone North (2018).

The 13th Asian Film Awards will take place on March 17.
