KOKDU: A STORY OF GUARDIAN ANGELS and MISMATCHED NOSE Join Berlin Lineup
KIM Tae-yong’s Kokdu: A Story of Guardian Angels (2018) and IM Kwon-taek’s 1980 classic Mismatched Nose (here under the title Jjak-ko, 1983) have joined the lineup of next month’s 69th Berlin International Film Festival. Both directors have participated in the event in the past. Previously announced was KIM Bora’s debut film House of Hummingbird(2018), which will screen in the Generation 14-plus section.
The first feature work by KIM Tae-yong since his well-received drama Late Autumn (2010), Kokdu: A Story of Guardian Angels (2018) is a cinematic adaptation of a Korean theatre piece. In this fairy tale, a pair of siblings attempt to recover their dying grandmother’s shoes, which were mistakenly traded for a puppy. Their journey brings them to the realm of death, where they are joined by four mythical creatures known as kokdu, whose job is to accompany the dead in their journey through the afterlife. KIM’s film debuted at the Busan International Film Festival last October.
Director IM has secured his ninth invitation to Berlin with Mismatched Nose(1983), one of his early masterpieces which was recently restored by the Korean Film Archive. Mismatched Nose (1983) concerns an aging former anti-communist agent who lands in a rehabilitation center where he finally comes face to face with Jjak-ko, the partisan who has eluded him for three decades. The remastered 2K DCP of the film will have its international premiere at the festival.
The 69th Berlinale, which has yet to reveal its full program, will unspool from February 7 to 17.
