PARASITE’s Lee Jungeun Leads Story About Struggles of Women in Film Industry 

Madonna (2015) director Shin Suwon is back with her latest film Hommage, which will premiere in competition at this year’s 34th Tokyo International Film Festival.

Starring Parasite (2019) actress Lee Jungeun, the film follows an out-of-work woman filmmaker who takes on a job restoring an old film. The journey the work takes her on ultimately reveals many of the struggles faced by women in the Korean film industry.

Alongside Lee Jungeun, who plays the filmmaker, the cast also features Move to Heaven actor Tang Junsang, Kwon Haehyo of Hotel by the River (2018), and Kim Hojung (Youngju, 2018).

Director Shin debuted in 2010 with the indie drama Passerby #3, an autobiographical work that also chronicled a family woman attempting to find work as a director. She went on to make the high school thriller PLUTO, which debuted as a gala presentation at the Busan International Film Festival in 2012, and then the dark woman’s drama Madonna, which screened in the Un Certain Regard lineup of the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Shin’s other films include Glass Garden (2017) and Light for the Youth (2020).

Shin was previously invited to the Tokyo event with Passerby #3, which earned the Best Asian-Middle Eastern Film Award there.

This year’s Tokyo International Film Festival runs from October 30 to November 8.
