Weak Openings for LIFE and ONEDAY

As spring kicked off it was a quiet weekend on the box office charts in Korea with new entries failing to unseat the films that have held on to the top two spots for the last three weeks. Overall, theaters sold 1.28 million tickets, with Hollywood titles taking up 59% of the total.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast live action update enjoyed a fourth weekend in first place as it slowed another 47%. Banking another 347,000 viewers (USD 2.55 million), the romantic fantasy has reached 4.62 million spectators (USD 33.1 million) in total.

Staying in second place for a third consecutive week was Showbox’s crime drama The Prison. The film was down 51% and brought in 250,000 admissions (USD 1.88 million), bolstering its total to 2.68 million admissions (USD 18.94 million).

Hollywood sci-fi Life debuted at number three on the charts, selling a middling 235,000 tickets (USD 1.77 million) over the weekend and 331,000 seats (USD 2.42 million) since its Wednesday start. Opening in fourth was local melodrama Oneday from director LEE Yoon-ki, which stars KIM Nam-gil and CHUN Woo-hee. The film bowed with 110,000 viewers (USD 796,000) and 163,000 spectators (USD 1.14 million) in its first five days.

Losing 83% of its business, anime update Ghost in the Shell dropped to 69,000 admissions (USD 517,000) in its second week, with 735,000 entries (USD 5.28 million) to date. Local mystery-horror House of the Disappeared, with KIM Yun-jin in the lead, had a slow start with 62,000 tickets (USD 451,000) sold and 98,000 viewers (USD 686,000) since Wednesday.

Fast and Furious 8 should have no trouble in topping the charts this coming weekend, while local family comedy Daddy You, Daughter Me will look to provide some counter-programming as crowds return to theaters.
