GLASS Opens Behind Local Holdovers

A pair of local holdovers continued to dominate the charts and contributed to a strong 64% market share for domestic titles. Meanwhile, new entries were soft which caused admissions to drop 20% to 1.94 million.

Retaining its first place rank was the period drama MAL·MO·E: The Secret Mission, which slowed just 22% as it welcomed another 618,000 viewers (USD 4.79 million), giving it a strong 2.23 million admissions (USD 16.7 million) to date.

Not far behind was the local fantasy comedy The Dude in Me, which had an even healthier 15% drop as it drew 478,000 spectators (USD 3.77 million) to bring its haul up to 1.6 million (USD 12.23 million) sales.

Though it topped the box office in America, M. Night SHYAMALAN’s Glass was a non-starter with 267,000 entries (USD 2.2 million) over the weekend and 340,000 tickets (USD 2.78 million) sold over its first four days. The superhero sci-fi thriller opened below its predecessor Split, which wound up with almost 1.7 million admissions in early 2017.

Slowing 55% in its third week was Ralph Breaks the Internet, which dropped to fourth place with 142,000 viewers (USD 1.01 million) over the weekend and 1.61 million entries (USD 11.33 million) overall.

Debuting in fifth place was the local animation Underdog which kicked off its run with 70,000 admissions (USD 494,000) during the weekend and has to date sold 122,000 (USD 857,000) tickets.

The local crime comedy Extreme Job will open this week ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday season in early February while the BTS concert film Love Yourself in Seoul will screen for one day only, this coming Saturday, January 26.
