Indieground, established by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC; Chairperson Han Sang-jun) to improve the distribution environment for Korean independent and art-house films, has announced the 90 final selections (22 features and 68 shorts) for the “2027 Independent Film Library.”
Indieground’s Independent Film Library is a program designed to build a sustainable distribution structure for Korean independent and art-house films and, through it, to broaden their audience base. This year’s open call drew strong interest, receiving a record 1,070 submissions (167 features and 903 shorts). The call was open to works completed after January 2025 (based on the date of first screening, or the release date for theatrically released films), and the final 90 films (22 features and 68 shorts) were chosen following review by the selection committee.
By genre, the selections span a diverse range, comprising 50 narrative films, 23 documentaries, 11 animated films and 6 experimental films. In its overall review, the selection committee stated, “Not only did we see quantitative growth in both features and shorts, but the passion and dedication of creators seeking to capture a wide variety of forms and subjects have also translated into qualitative growth.”
Each final selection will receive a distribution support grant of KRW 4 million (approx. USD 2,700) for features and KRW 1.5 million (approx. USD 1,000) for shorts. This will be accompanied by multifaceted support for the distribution and outreach of the films, including special program screenings, community screenings, educational screenings, online screenings and promotional campaigns. Last year’s selections for the “2025 Independent Film Library” were screened through thematic curations on Indieground’s online screening platform, and also reached audiences at cultural venues across the country through community screening support. Indieground has also expanded screening opportunities and broadened points of contact with audiences by producing interview content with directors and actors and organizing special programs in partnership with external institutions. This year’s 90 selections will likewise reach audiences across a range of platforms and venues, beginning with Indieground’s online screening platform in 2027.
