THE MAGICIAN Sells to 4 Foreign Territories

Period Drama Casts A Spell during AFM

Lotte Entertainment has reported a clutch of sales for its upcoming period drama The Magician during the recent American Film Market that took place in Santa Monica, CA.

Directed by KIM Dai-seung, the film was picked up by buyers in Japan, Taiwan, Turkey and the Philippines based on positive reactions to a four-minute promotional video screened during the market. In addition, distributors from Thailand and Hong Kong expressed interest while plans for a theatrical release in the United States were also discussed.

The Magician takes place during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty Era and follows a princess who journeys to the Qing Dynasty for marriage. During her travels, she meets and falls in love with a magician. Featuring as the magician will be YOO Seung-ho, in his first post-military service role, while GO A-ra appears as the princess.

YOO, who began acting at the tender age of nine in 2002’s The Way Home, is better known for his TV work, but has consistently appeared in major motion pictures, including the popular 2011 thriller Blind opposite KIM Ha-neul. GO was most recently seen in the 2012 dramas Papa and PaceMaker. Featuring alongside YOO and GO are veteran supporting actors such as KWAK Do-won (The Attorney, 2013), LEE Gyoung-young (The Pirates, 2014) and PARK Cheol-min (Another Family, 2014).

Director KIM is no stranger to the Joseon Era, having already helmed Blood Rain (2005) and most recently The Concubine (2012). After working as an assistant director for IM Kwon-taek on landmark films such as Seopyeonje (1993) and Chunhyang (2000), KIM broke out with the classic romantic drama Bungee Jumping Of Their Own (2001), starring LEE Byung-hun.

The Magician is scheduled for a December release in Korea.
