31st Fribourg Welcomes 9 from Korea

THE TRUTH BENEATH Competes in Switzerland

Always a supporter of Korean cinema, the Fribourg International Film Festival is once again rolling out the red carpet for Korean films this year, this time welcoming nine titles for its 31st edition, which kicked off on March 31st and will conclude on April 8th.

The festival’s International Competition, which awards the Regard d’or to one competitor, will feature LEE Kyoung-mi’s thriller The Truth Beneath, which debuted in Korea last June and has screened at several festivals around the world and won a number of prizes at home, including Best Director award from the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.

Taking part in the jury for the international competition this year will be KANG Soo-youn, the legendary Korean performer who won the Best Actress prize from the Venice International Film Festival for her part in IM Kwon-taek’s The Surrogate Womb in 1987 and currently serves as the director of the Busan International Film Festival. One of her most famous films, JANG Sun-woo’s The Road To Race Track (1991), will screen in the International Jury Films section.

The Midnight Cinema lineup is particularly heavy with Korean films, featuring KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows, NO Zin-soo’s THE MAIDROID and YEON Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN, which will screen in 4DX.

Another three Korean titles will be seen in the Genre Cinema program: MO Hong-jin’s Missing You, KIM Hwi’s The Chosen: Forbidden Cave; and NA Hong-jin’s smash hit horror-thriller THE WAILING. LEE Seok-hoon’s expedition drama The Himalayas is also invited to the New Territories: Nepal section.

The last Korean title to pick up Fribourg’s Regard d’or was LEE Su-jin’s HAN Gong-ju in 2014.
