M-Line Brings Commercial Drama, Acclaimed Indies and VR Content to EFM

Latest from YIM Soon-rye and LEE Joon-ik among Korean Distributor’s Berlin Lineup



M-Line Distribution presented a wealth of titles at this year’s European Film Market (EFM), which include several upcoming commercial titles, an array of acclaimed independent films as well as their first VR content acquisitions.

Leading their slate is the upcoming youth drama Little Forest, the latest film from Forever The Moment (2008) director YIM Soon-rye, which will bow domestically on February 28. Based on a Japanese manga of the same name, the film stars KIM Tae-ri of The Handmaiden (2016) as a young woman who escapes the bustle of the city to regain her senses in the countryside. KIM co-stars with RYU Jun-yeol (A Taxi Driver, 2017), JIN Ki-joo (making her feature film debut) and her The Handmaiden co-star MOON So-ri.

Out in May will be I Want to Know Your Parents, the latest film from The Tower (2012) director KIM Ji-hoon. Featuring SUL Kyung-gu (The Merciless, 2017), OH Dal-su (Veteran, 2015) and CHUN Woo-hee (THE WAILING, 2016), the intense school-set drama is based on a Japanese play which recounts the aftermath of a young boy’s suicide, when a note naming four bullies is found and the parents gather at the school.

Following the successes of DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet (2016) and last year’s Anarchist from Colony (2017), M-Line Distribution continues their relationship with hit filmmaker LEE Joon-ik, as they are representing his latest film Sunset in My Hometown. A present day story of a wannabe rapper who returns to the countryside, the film stars PARK Jung-min of DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet and KIM Go-eun of Coin Locker Girl (2015) and will also be released domestically in May.

M-Line Distribution represented several acclaimed independent titles that debuted at last year’s Busan International Film Festival. These include LEE Kwang-kuk’s A Tiger in Winter and JEONG Ga-young’s Hit the Night (2017), which were both invited to the International Film Festival Rotterdam last month, and JEON Go-woon’s Microhabitat, which screened at the Göteborg Film Festival earlier this year. Their slate also includes KIM Ui-seok’s After My Death (2017), which picked up the New Currents Award in Busan.

Another new M-Line Distribution title is BAEK Jong-seok’s animation My Bad Boss, based on a popular webcomic of the same name. The project is the second production of the major webtoon purveyor Lezhin Comics, which began their foray into film production with Hit the Night.

For the very first time, M-Line Distribution represented VR content, having acquired both YOO Tae-kyung’s Help Me and Chuck CHAE’s Follow the White Rabbit. Help Me is currently screening at the CGV Yongsan theater in Seoul, where it can be viewed in their newly equipped V BUSTERS cabins.
