NYAFF Invites 10 from Korea for 17th Edition
MICROHABITAT to Compete, KIM Yun-seok to Receive Star Asia Award
The New York Asian Film Festival will return for its 17th edition at the end of this month, lifting its curtain on the 29th. Among this year’s lineup will be ten Korean films, including JEON Go-woon ’s Microhabitat in competition. Korean actor KIM Yun-seok will also be on hand to receive one of this year’s NYAFF Star Asia Awards.
The debut of JEON Go-woon , a member of the KwangHwaMoon Cinema collective, Microhabitat debuted to great acclaim at the Busan International Film Festival last October, where it picked up the CGV ARTHOUSE Award. E Som (Scarlet Innocence, 2014) leads the cast as a young housekeeper who becomes a vagabond when an increase in the price of cigarettes upends her careful budgeting.
Known for The Chaser (2008), The Thieves (2012) and many more, KIM Yun-seok will be feted with a screening of his most recent film, JANG Joon-hwan’s hit political drama 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), in which he plays a ruthless chief in the intelligence department in the 1980s.
Also invited to screen in New York are KIM Ui-suk’s After My Death (2017), the New Currents winner in Busan last year, JEONG Ga-young’s sophomore film Hit the Night (2017), KIM Hong-sun’s Joseon Era action film The Age of Blood (2017), LEE Il-ha’s documentary Counters (2017), KIM Hyun-suk’s comfort woman drama I Can Speak (2017), Malene CHOI’s Danish-Korean co-production and Berlinale-selected The Return, YIM Soon-rye’s hit youth drama Little Forest, and LEE Byoung-heon’s affair drama What a Man Wants.
Most of the Korean films will have their North American premieres while The Age of Blood will be receiving its international premiere. The 17th NYAFF will run from June 29 to July 15.
