Filmfest München Invites Five Korean Indies
BURNING Lead Korean Delegation in Germany
Filmfest München invited five feature films works from Korea for this year’s edition, which kicked off on June 28 and ran until July 7. Among the selected titles were LEE Chang-dong’s BURNING, LEE Kwang-kuk ’s A Tiger in Winter (2017), LEE Hwan’s Park Hwa-young (2017), LIM Tae-gue’s The Seeds of Violence (2017) and Pushpendra Singh’s Indian-Korean co-production Ashwatthama.
Director LEE Chang-dong’s first film in eight years, BURNING debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this May. Based on a short story by MURAKAMI Haruki, the film stars YOO Ah-in (Veteran, 2015), Steven YEUN (Okja, 2017) and newcomer JUN Jong-seo .
LIM Tae-gue’s debut film, the military service drama The Seeds of Violence, picked up the prize for Best Korean Film at least year’s Jeonju International Film Festival. LIM returned to Jeonju this spring with his second film, the Jeonju Cinema Project, The Land on the Waves.
All three of the other invitees debuted at the Busan International Film Festival last October. A Tiger in Winter is the third indie drama from LEE Kwang-kuk , following Romance Joe (2012) and A Matter of Interpretation (2015). Park Hwa-young, MYUNG FILMS LAB production, is the debut of LEE Hwan, while Pushpendra Singh’s Ashwatthama premiered in BIFF’s signature New Currents competition.
