China’s Huayi Tencent Boards Big-Budget Space Drama
Chinese outfit Huayi Tencent Entertainment has boarded the upcoming space drama The Victory (translated title). The film’s local investor and distributor Merry Christmas revealed that Huayi Tencent has joined the project with a KRW 5 billion (USD 4.2 million) investment. This would represent approximately one quarter of the total budget, which was previously reported as KRW 20 million (USD 16.8 million).
Huayi Tencent Entertainment is a new joint venture between the film studio Huayi Brothers Media and the global IT company Tencent Holdings, also secreted Chinese distribution rights for the title. The film marks the first major project for Merry Christmas, a new film investor on the Korean scene founded by YOU Jeong-hun, the former CEO of Showbox.
Merry Christmas’ YOO expressed his excitement at their alliance with Huayi Tencent and revealed the possibility of developing further content for The Victory through diverse media such as webtoons, dramas and games. HU Jun Yi, the director of Huyai Tencent, related his positive impression in the script and his trust in director JO’s abilities behind the camera.
The Victory, which will be Korea’s very first space-set blockbuster, is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin production in July, ahead of a theatrical debut at some point in 2020.
