KIM Yun-seok’s Director Debut Triumphs at HIFF

Veteran star KIM Yun-seok’s directorial debut Another Child has picked up the NETPAC Award at this year’s 39th Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF).

The film concerns a teenage girl (KIM Hye-jun) who discovers that her father is having an affair with the mother (KIM So-jin) of her classmate (PARK Se-jin). The father, played by KIM Yun-seok, runs away from the situation while his wife (YUM Jung-ah) confronts his mistress.

Another Child debuted locally on April 11 to critical acclaim but soft box office returns, however it didn’t take long for people to discover the film overseas, and KIM’s work has enjoyed a steady stream of festival screenings in 2019. Prior to Hawaii, it picked up a New Flesh Award: Special Mention at the Fantasia International Film Festival and the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film Competition at the New York Asian Film Festival. The film has also screened at the Busan and Vancouver International Film Festivals, among others.

Recently the film earned the Best New Actress Award for KIM Hye-jun at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. Director KIM is known for his string of box office hits as an actor, including The Chaser (2008), The Thieves (2012), The Priests (2015) and 1987: When the Day Comes (2017).

The film was one of nine Korean works screening at HIFF, alongside PARASITE, EXIT, Inseparable Bros, Man of Men, The Bad Guys: Reign of Chaos, Granny Poetry Club, Vertigo and The Wandering Chef.
