KIM Min-ju’s TWENTY Invited to Cannes Student Short Competition

Soongsil University Short Scores Cinéfondation Selection

The Korean short film Twenty from student director KIM Min-ju has been selected as part of the Cinefondation lineup of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film is one of 17 student shorts invited to the competition this year and was chosen among 1952 entries.

KIM’s 22-minute film follows a girl on the eve of her 20th birthday and what happens to her when she is brought to a cheap motel by friends. Director KIM is currently attending Soongsil Unversity in Seoul.

A testament to the country’s impressive student filmmaking scene, Korean shorts are regular fixtures in the Cinefondation section. During a five-year starting in 2007, four Korean works scored the third place prize in the competition: HONG Sung-hoon’s A Reunion (2007), PARK Jae-ok’s stop (2008), JO Sung-hee’s Don’t Step Out of the House (2009) and SON Tae-gyum’s Fly by Night (2011).

A competition section for student films that was first launched in 1998, this year’s Cinefondation will take place in the fall and the jury will be announced at a later date. The Cannes Film Festival usually takes place in May but owing to the COVID-19 crisis, the event was cancelled. An official selection was announced, which includes the Korean films Peninsula by YEON Sang-ho and IM Sang-soo’s Heaven: To the Land of Happiness, but no screenings took place on the Croisette.
