HONG Sang-soo Scores 11th New York Film Festival Invite
Acclaimed director HONG Sang-soo will participate in the 58th New York Film Festival with his latest film The Woman Who Ran (2019), which has been invited to NYFF’s main slate. The film, his 24th, is already his 11th to be invited to the event.
The Woman Who Ran (2019) debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival this year, where it earned the Silver Bear for Best Director. HONG was only the second Korean filmmaker to ever pick up the prize, following KIM Ki-duk in 2004 with Samaritan Girl. The film was also invited to the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Taipei Film Festival this year.
HONG’S film is the only Korean work invited to NYFF this year, which will open with Steve MCQUEEN’s Lovers Rock, while Chloe ZHAO’s Nomadland serves as the Centerpiece screening and Azazel JACOBS’ French Exit will close the festival. The festival runs from September 17 to October 11.
The film stars KIM Min-hee, working with HONG for the seventh time, as well as SEO Young-hwa, SONG Sun-mi, KIM Sae-byuk and KWON Hae-hyo, who have all also worked frequently with the director in the past. KIM Min-hee plays Gam-hee, who visits friends of hers while her husband is away on a business trip. She visits two of them at their homes and crosses paths with the third by accident in a theater.
HONG’s latest will be released domestically on September 17.
