Lee Mikyoung, Vice Chair of CJ Group, Chosen as a Cover Model for the Special Edition of 『Variety』, an American Magazine, to Celebrate International Women's Day

Lee Mikyoung (Miky Lee), Vice Chairperson of CJ Group, has become the cover model of a special edition published by 『Variety』, a U.S. popular culture media, to celebrate International Women's Day. 『Variety』 said they selected Vice Chair Lee Mikyoung as the cover model for 'International Women's Day Special Edition,' which will be published for the first time to mark International Women's Day on March 8, noting the achievements Vice Chair Lee has made in the global entertainment industry.

Vice Chair Lee Mikyoung joined CHEILJEDANG in 1995 and has led CJ's overall cultural business with Chairman Lee Jaehyun (Jay Lee), her younger brother. Starting with the successful investment negotiations for the establishment of DREAMWORKS in the same year, Vice Chair Lee has worked her way up to film production, investment, and distribution, leading CJ's growth as a cultural company. While studying in the U.S., Lee was exposed to the Hollywood-based film industry and a variety of cultural content, and in an interview with the film magazine 『Cine21』 last year, she said,  "I could dream of becoming a content producer and contributing to cultural diversity in a mainstream position in the global market from the experience."

Vice Chair Lee has been with the history of Korean film development by investing and producing Bong Joonho's Snowpiercer, Park Chanwook's Thirst, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK, and Kim Jiwoon's The Good The Bad The Weird. In February 2020, when Bong Joonho's film PARASITE won the Best Picture, the Best Director, the Best Screenplay, and the International Feature Film Awards at the Academy Awards, Lee as an executive producer joined Director Bong in writing a new history of Korean cinema. At the time, she was on the stage of the award ceremony and said, "I really really really want to thank our Korean film audience, all moviegoers, who've been really supporting all our movies and never hesitated to give a straightforward opinion on what they feel like their movies. And that made us really never be able to be complacent and keep pushing the directors, the creators, keep pushing the envelopes. And without you, our Korean film audience, we're not here. Thank you."

Meanwhile, Lee Mikyoung was elected Vice Chair of the Academy Museum's board of trustees in September 2020, showing her presence in the global film industry. Now, she is active in the global entertainment industry, promoting various cultural projects such as KCON that leads the music business as well as producing and distributing movies and TV series at home and abroad, including Snowpiercer in a drama version and the movie K-Pop: Lost in America (working title).

Now, the world is paying attention to Vice Chair Lee's influence. She was selected as the 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow Community members by the Davos World Economic Forum in 1997 and was on the Forbes Asia list of Asia's 50 Power Businesswomen in 2012 and 2014. In 2020, Lee was selected as the International Producer of the Year by 『The Hollywood Reporter』 and 500 influential business leaders leading the global media industry by 『Variety』. In October 2021, she was also selected as the 20 Most Powerful Women in Global Entertainment by 『The Hollywood Reporter』, consistently pointed out by foreign media as a major figure leading the entertainment industry.

In a recent interview with 『Cine21』, Vice Chair Lee expressed her thoughts on the situation in Hollywood and Korea that female filmmakers should be given equal opportunities as male filmmakers. Referring to Kwak Shinae, CEO of Barunson E&A, who produced PARASITE, and Actor Youn Yuhjung, who won the Academy's Best Supporting Actress Award for Minari, Vice Chair Lee Mikyoung also said, "I think there are still many talented female directors and actors who have not been discovered yet. I will continue to make efforts to support them with their talents."
