Local thriller INSANE prevailed during a slow weekend at the Korean box office which saw just 1.06 million viewers visit the multiplex. Nevertheless, Hollywood releases maintained the market edge, grabbing a 67% share.
From director LEE Cheol-ha and with stars KANG Ye-won and LEE Sang-yun, INSANE topped the weekend with 308,367 admissions (USD 2.29 million) and 355,102 viewers (USD 2.6 million) in total over four days. Still a presence in its eighth week was Disney’s Zootopia which dropped just 25% for another 218,266 spectators (USD 1.58 million). That gives the toon a stellar 3.9 million admissions (USD 26.61 million) to date.
US sci-fi 10 Cloverfield Lane mustered 183,116 viewers (USD 1.33 million) over the frame and 236,562 admissions (USD 1.7 million) since its debut. Featuring Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) star Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, sports drama Eddie the Eagle had a slow start in fourth with 108,744 viewers (USD 771,316) and 140,446 tickets (USD 981,727) sold so far. Crashing another 70% and four spots was Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, managing just 103,708 spectators (USD 777,523) for 2.18 million admissions (USD 15.86 million) total in 18 days.
Hollywood awards pic Trumbo with Bryan Cranston topped the limited releases with 20,987 tickets sold (USD 151,242) over the weekend, and 33,815 viewers (USD 231,579) in total, which was good enough for sixth place on the chart. Just under it was a rerelease of classic indie drama Before Sunrise (1995), which took in 17,185 filmgoers (USD 124,976). Figures for its initial release, which occurred in 1996, are not available.
Local films will look to take back the market share crown this coming weekend with the release of dual-timeline romantic thriller Time Renegades and Colonial Era romantic drama LOVE, LIES, which are currently leading the reservations chart.
