THE VILLAINESS Disappoints in Second Place
Despite record-breaking figures on Memorial Day last Tuesday, business over the ensuing weekend was marginally down week-on-week, as 2.22 million entries were counted. Korean titles continued to disappoint as the local market share was just 26% while Hollywood accounted for 71% of sales.
The latest iteration of
The Mummy, which is supposed to launch the Dark Universe series for Universal, debuted in exceptional fashion on Tuesday when it scored the largest opening day of all time with 873,000 admissions (USD 6.57 million), edging out previous record holder
TRAIN TO BUSAN. Star Tom Cruise has long been a popular draw in Korea, with
Edge of Tomorrow and
Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation proving particularly popular as they topped 4.6 and 6.1 million viewers, respectively, over the last few years.
Things cooled down as the week wore on but The Mummy still easily topped the weekend chart with 1.13 million viewers (USD 8.6 million) over the weekend, giving it a robust 2.38 million spectator (USD 17.78 million) haul in six days.
Opening much further behind in second was local action-thriller
The Villainess with 380,000 entries (USD 2.85 million). The
JUNG Byung-gil film with
KIM Ok-vin in the lead premiered in a midnight slot at the Cannes Film Festival last month and has sold 459,000 tickets (USD 3.37 million) in five days.
Wonder Woman slipped 70% and two spots as it lost its hold on the top spot. The DC Universe tentpole brought in another 241,000 viewers (USD 1.77 million), bringing its total to a decent 1.86 million (USD 13.39 million).
Also down two rungs and 70% was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. In its third week of play the film lured in 150,00 moviegoers (USD 1.11 million), raising its admissions to 2.88 million (USD 21 million).
Local documentary
OUR PRESIDENT remained a force to be reckoned as it eased 54% in its third sessions for another 137,000 (USD 997,000) sales, giving it an impressive 1.57 million entries (USD 11 million) to date.
Meanwhile local period action title
WARRIORS OF THE DAWN crashed out of the top five in its second weekend as it dove 90%. Another 35,000 viewers (USD 246,000) gives it 793,000 spectators (USD 5.34 million) to date.
Local time slip drama-thriller
