WONDER WOMAN 1984 Poised to Inject Some Life Back into Market
With new COVID cases steady around 1,000 per day, audiences largely stayed away from theaters, and distributors followed suit, as they launched no major new content in multiplexes. Amid the COVID-19 spike, it was one of the quietest weekends on record, with 107,000 sales, though that number should improve greatly this coming week with a new Hollywood blockbuster on the way. Also bound to change is the market share, which currently stands at 62% in favor of local fare.
Following its unfortunate launch during one of the toughest times of the pandemic, KIM Jong-kwan’s Josée slid only 45% during its second weekend and handily clinched a second top place finish with 31,000 sales (USD 263,000). To date, the romantic drama has attracted 139,000 viewers (USD 1.15 million).
Rising up 10% and one spot during its seventh weekend on the charts was the local caper film Collectors, which sold another 16,000 tickets (USD 120,000). This brought its total to 1.48 million entries (USD 12.24 million), one of the strongest totals of any film released during the pandemic this year.
Local political dramedy Best Friend was down 42% as it filled another 15,000 seats (USD 120,000). To date, the film, which marks the return to screens of OH Dal-su, has brought in 408,000 spectators (USD 3.19 million).
Down in fourth place was the US thriller Run, which slowed just 33%. 7,000 more tickets (USD 61,000) were snatched up over the frame, giving the film 269,000 admissions (USD 2.25 million) to date.
The closest thing to a new major release over the past weekend was Love Actually, which was re-released in time for Christmas, as it is every year. 4,500 fans (USD 39,000) went to see the film, raising its lifetime total to 320,000 entries.
Barring any sudden calendar changes, business should receive a hefty shot in the arm this week with the release of Warner Bros’ Wonder Woman 1984, one of the few Hollywood tentpoles to make it to theaters following the beginning of the epidemic. As of early Monday morning, the film is handily topping the reservations chart with 71% of all sales.
