Delivers 1st Draft for New York and Korea Set Story

Currently residing on the Jacob Burns Film Center campus in Pleasantville, NY, where he has been invited as an international fellow, director BONG Joon-ho has been taking part in Q&As and interviews as part of a retrospective of his work along with his producer CHOI Doo-ho. During an interview with Twitchfilm, he revealed some of the first details of his next project, which is called Okja.

Featuring a Korean female lead and English-language supporting players, Okja will be set 40% in New York and 60% back in Korea, employing a mix of English and Korean. Not much is known about the project yet, but BONG has completed a first draft and mentioned that the film’s budget would fall somewhere in between that of his previous films The Host (2006), USD 11 million, and Snowpiercer (2013), USD 40 million.

In the same interview, the director mentioned his difficulty producing last year’s Haemoo and his intention to remain focused on directing in future. He hopes to work on smaller projects, offering that he may not take on a project the size of Snowpiercer again. Beyond Okja, the filmmaker is also preparing another project, which will be even smaller.
