MOON So-ri won the Marcello Mastroianni Award as best new actress at the 2002 Venice Film Festival for the movie <Oasis>. The sylph-like starlet completely disappeared into the role Gongju(meaning princess), a woman with cerebral palsy, in the film. The paralyzing disability left Gongju unable to speak clearly or control her body. But she fell in love with Jongdoo([SUL Kyoung-gu]), a third time ex-prisoner. MOON was praised for her realistic portrayal of a disabled, but joyful young woman in romantic situations. She made another 180-degree turn from her previous screen image appearing in <A Good Lawyer’s Wife>. She played Hojeong who developed strong sexual desire in a decaying marriage. MOON received the Best Actress award from the Stockholm International Film Festival in 2003 for the role. It is said that there were questions from abroad asking if the two characters, Gongju and Hojeong, were played by the same person. She played a tough wife in <The President's Barber>, a film depicts 20 years of modern Korean history, a helpless spinster in <Sa-kwa>, and an Olympic participating handball player in <Forever the Moment>. She is Korea’s one of the finest character actress who successfully portrays original female characters. Over the next few years, MOON appeared in three HONG Sangsoo films (<Like You Know It All>, 2009; <HaHaHa>, 2010; <In Another Country>, 2012) among other low-budget works like PARK Chan-kyong’s <Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits>. At the same time she has starred in an array of commercial films, including IM Sang-soo’s <The Housemaid> remake in 2010, the action comedy <The Spy: Undercover Operation> in 2013 and 2014’s women’s comedy <Venus Talk>. Later that year she paired up with HONG Sangsoo once again for <Hill of Freedom>, which debuted in Venice, while also helming her first short, the BIFF-selected <The Actress>. She followed that up with another short, <The Running Actress>, which bowed at Jeonju in 2015. That same year she appeared in another short by ZHANG Lu, which became a part of his anthology feature <Love and…> In 2016, MOON took on a supporting role in PARK Chan-wook’s Cannes-invited <The Handmaiden>.
