Born in 1968 and a graduate of the Korea National University of Arts, actress SEO Young-hwa began her career on the theater stage and then was fortunate to land her very first feature role in the modern Korean classic, BONG Joon-ho’s <Memories of Murder>. She had no trouble landing supporting parts in major films after that, including HAN Jae-rim’s <Rules of Dating> (2005) and 2008’s <A Man Who Was Superman>, alongside HWANG Jung-min. Arguably her most important film relationship was forged in 2009, when she appeared in her first HONG Sangsoo film, <Like You Know It All>. She quickly followed this up with HONG’s <Oki’s Movie> (2010). 2011 saw her star in the kidnap drama <Children…> as well as the indie comedy <Romance Joe>, directed by LEE Kwang-kuk, one of HONG’s former assistant directors. She spent part of 2012 working on YOO Ji-tae’s directorial debut <Mai Ratima> and 2013 for her consisted of a pair of thrillers, <The Gifted Hands> and <Hwayi: A Monster Boy>. She worked with both HONG and LEE again in 2014, on their new films <Hill of Freedom> and <A Matter of Interpretation>, before signing on the Korean Academy of Film Arts feature <Alice in Earnestland>, released in 2015.
