Gender : Female

Nationality : South Korea

LEE continues the tradition of a talented yet small group of woman filmmakers of Korea. She made her feature debut with the box-office success <Art Museum by the Zoo>, based on her own screenplay and featured the performances of [SHIM Eun-ha] and [LEE Seong-jae] during their heydays. Although the film has the form of melodrama, it also received praises for comparing and contrasting the narrative’s couple with another couple in a story within the main story. Her second feature was <The Way Home> (2002), about a boy from the city who is forced to stay with his grandmother in a remote village. Set in a remote farming village with amateur actors (an elderly woman in her 70s and then-8 year old [YOO Seung-ho]), the film was simple in nature yet achieved remarkable box-office success, drawing over 1.5 million admissions in Seoul alone. After a prolonged absence, LEE came back in 2011 with <A Reason to Live> starring actress [SONG Hye-kyo]. The film depicts the conflicted emotions of a woman who forgave a hit-and-run driver that killed her fiancé. Unlike her first two features, LEE dealt with her subject matter in a serious manner.
