Gender : Male

Nationality : South Korea

Jung Byunggil, born in 1980, attended the Seoul Action School, the most famous stunt school in Korea. After completing his curriculum with the directing of the short crime action film <Standing On The Edge Of A Knife> (2005), he entered the film department of Chung-Ang University. His feature debut <Action Boys> (2008), a documentary that follows other former students of the Seoul Action School as they try to make a name for themselves in the film industry, garnered critical acclaim for his fresh approach to the genre. It also marked his first collaboration with his brother Jung Byungsik, as co-screenwriter. Action-thriller <Confession of Murder> (2012), which tackled the contentious issue of the statute of limitations regarding murders, was favorably received by the critics, the film winning Best Thriller at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, with Jung later receiving Best New Direction at the Grand Bell Awards and Best Screenplay at the Baeksang Arts Awards. After he founded with his brother their own production company, he gained wider recognition both at home and internationally when his next film <The Villainess> (2017) was invited to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Midnight Screening section. Starring Kim Okbin as a woman who has been trained since her youngest age by a mysterious group to be a fearless assassin, the film was lauded by the critics for its action scenes that involved several daring long-take set pieces, to the point where the motorcycle sword fight inspired a similar scene in <John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum>. In 2022, he attempted to one that up with the Netflix Original film <Carter>, another action film shot and edited to make it seem like a single 132-minute long take while featuring dizzying stunts and intense gun fights. Jung is now preparing to take on his next challenge, his Hollywood debut with a film adaptation of the comic Afterburn.
