Born in 1980, Kim Sungkyun made his debut in the play <Room Number 13> in the year 2008 and settled down as a stage actor by performing in famous plays such as <Liar 1>, <Suspense Hamlet>, and <Kang Pul’s Happily Ever After>. He made his debut on screen in 2012 with <Nameless Gangster: The War Against Crime>, playing the right-hand man to Ha Jungwoo’s gang boss. Along with his next big role being that of a serial killer in the ensemble thriller <The Neighbors> (2012), Kim was quickly typecast as a villain. Between both roles, however, he received numerous Best New Actor prizes and was firmly established as a top-tier performer in the industry. He was extremely busy starting in 2013, appearing in films such as <South Bound>, <Fasten Your Seatbelt>, <The Suspect>, <Secretly Greatly> and <Hwayi: A Monster Boy>. The next year, he was in the period action film <KUNDO: Age of the Rampant>, and also got his first leading role in Jang Jin’s <We Are Brothers>. He finally managed to subvert his ‘bad guy’ image when he was chosen to join the main cast of the hit youth drama series <Reply 1994> in 2014. Another supporting role came in Ha Jungwoo’s <Chronicle of a Blood Merchant> in 2014, as well as his second lead performance in the revenge thriller <The Deal> (2014). Kim has become particularly busy starting in 2016. Cast as the main villain in the action film <The Phantom Detective> (2016), he returned to the “good side” in <The Sheriff in Town> (2016), playing the candid brother-in-law helping Lee Sungmin’s retired cop, and also in <The Golden Slumber> (2017), as a friend of Kang Dongwon’s fugitive deliveryman. After he starred in the period drama <FENGSHUI> (2018), he was the Go master of the protagonist in <The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful> (2019), and in 2021, he came back as unlucky new homeowner who moves in only to see his house fall into a hole in the action film <Sinkhole> (2021).
